Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Localization: Opportunities and Challenges

Future generation communication systems are aiming to provide a tremendous high data rate with low-latency reliable and three-dimensional coverage. To achieve such challenging goal, it is required have very precise location information related the mobile terminal. The advancement of signal processing techniques technologies enables path for improving localization performance. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been widely considered as key element future wireless communication. Over past few years, performance IRS-assisted networks extensively investigated from point view purposes its improvement. However, by virtue potential, IRS finds application localization. In this paper, we discuss summarize works that already carried out targeting addition, figured associated challenges opportunities scale up accuracy. Particularly in authors discussed issues channel modeling, estimation, system architecture, hardware impairment, deployment strategies, phase optimization, mobility management, near-field environments.
